Inspired by faith, the Sisters of Notre Dame lead through education and service.

The Sisters of Notre Dame were founded in 1850 in Coesfeld, Germany, when two young teachers, Hilligonde Wolbring and Elisabeth Kuhling, opened their home to orphaned and neglected children. Inspired by their faith and the educational tradition of Reverend Bernard Overberg, they began a life of service rooted in Catholic values and care for others.

With guidance from the Sisters of Notre Dame of Amersfoort and spiritual director Rev. Theodor Elting, they entered religious life—Hilligonde becoming Sister Maria Aloysia and Elisabeth becoming Sister Maria Ignatia. They were soon joined by Sister Maria Bernarda, who helped shape the congregation’s educational mission in both Europe and the United States.

Today, the Sisters of Notre Dame and their collaborators serve in 18 countries across five continents, continuing their mission through education and other ministries. They remain committed to bringing hope, joy, and God’s goodness to the world through their work and witness.

Sponsored by the Sisters of Notre Dame

Notre Dame Elementary and Middle School shares in the rich spiritual and educational heritage of the Sisters of Notre Dame of Chardon, Ohio. As the sponsoring congregation, the Sisters entrust their mission and vision for Catholic education to the school community, ensuring that the values of faith, excellence, and service remain at the heart of all we do.

The school operates under the leadership structure established by Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School (NDCL), with a Board Member, representing the Sisters and a lay Board of Directors. Together, they uphold the school’s Catholic identity and guide its strategic direction, while school administration is responsible for daily operations and implementation of this mission.
